(6월 24일자: Addis Ababa) 유엔세계식량계획(United Nations World Food Prorgamme, WFP)은 오늘 에티오피아의 “발전을 위한 구매(Purchase for Progress, P4P)” 프로젝트의 공식적인 시작을 발표하였다. 빌&멜린다 게이츠 재단(Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation)의 후원을 받는 이 사업을 통해 WFP는 향후 5년 동안 소규모 자작농으로부터 126,000톤의 식량 구매할 계획이다.
P4P는 WFP의 현지구매정책을 확대한 프로젝트로서 소규모 자작농들이 재배하는 농산물을 WFP가구입하여 식량지원 프로그램에 활용하고, 이들이 현지 농산물 시장에서 경쟁력 있는 주체가 되도록 지원한다.

현재 전 세계 10억 명 이상의 사람들이 기아로 고통 받고 있습니다. 기아는 생존을 위협하는 가장 큰 문제 중 하나로 특히 5세 이하 어린이의 사망 원인 중 3분의 1이 영양실조와 직결되어 있습니다. WFP는 오는 6월 6일 전세계 75개국 200여 곳에서 “Walk the World: 기아퇴치” 행사를 통해 이러한 기아 문제의 심각성을 세상에 알리고 그 해결을 지원하고자 합니다.
